Influenza, or flu, is caused by two species of orthomyxoviruses, A and B, which enter pulmonary epithelial cells by means of glycoprotein spikes composed of hemagglutinin (HA) or neuraminidase (NA). Virus genomes consist of eight separate pieces of –ssRNA and are extremely variable.

Mutations of HA and NA give rise to new flu strains about every 2 years through antigenic drift of a single strain of virus in a given geographic area. Antigenic shift produces new epidemic strains about every 10 years from reassortment of genomes of different influenzavirus strains within the same host cells.
