Hydrogen atoms are first stripped of their electrons, producing positively charged hydrogen ions. Then the electrons move from a negative electrode to a positive electrode, creating an electrical current. The hydrogen ions move through a proton exchange membrane and combine with oxygen and electrons in the positive electrode to form water.
