Gender Schema Theory

• Some people are highly gender schematic –They have learned that many characteristics, behaviors and events are associated with gender. –They sort information primarily based on gender.
• When observing a situation in which people vary on a number of perspectives, they attend to gender as the first and most significant factor.
• Sex-typed people are most likely to be gender schematic.

Gender Schematic People

• Can more quickly indicate the gender-appropriateness of behaviors and objects.
• Are more aware of the gender composition of a group.
• When asked to learn and recall a series of names and objects: –recall more gender specific terms. –cluster those words appropriate to a given gender together for recall.
• Are better at distinguishing individuals of their own gender from one another than they are at distinguishing individuals of the other gender from one another.

Gender Schema Theory

• Since gender schemata are learned, one can unlearn or prevent learning by concentrating of eliminating all gender differential behaviors or details from the culture.
