Fluid produced by the liver and stored in the gall bladder before secretion into the small intestine (duodenum) via the bile duct. It contains the bile salts, which function in the emulsification and hence digestion of fats, bile pigments (bilirubin and biliverdin, which are the result of breakdown of the haemoglobin of red blood cells), phospholipids, and cholesterol. It is alkaline, and hence neutralizes the acid from the stomach as the food reaches the small intestine. Relatively large amounts of vitamin B12 and folic acid are secreted in the bile and then reabsorbed from the small intestine. Most of the cholesterol and bile salts are also reabsorbed from the small intestine
