* Link details with the big picture. Rather than just focusing on one or two pieces of evidence that support your perception of a person, look for more pieces of evidence to help you develop a deeper understanding.

* Become aware of others' perceptions of you. Pay close attention to feedback you receive from others, especially the feedback you receive from the people with whom you have the strongest relationships.

* Check your perceptions. In order to check the accuracy of your perceptions, use both indirect and direct perception checking. Indirect perception checking involves seeking additional information in order to confirm or refute your ideas about a person or persons. Direct perception checking involves asking the person directly if your interpretations are correct.

* Become other-oriented. Practise socially decentring and empathizing with those around you. Gather as much information as possible about the circumstances surrounding the other person, as well as gathering as much information as possible about the other person.

* Be sensitive to cultural differences. Keep in mind that cultures differ. This simple awareness will reduce your perceptual problems when dealing with a person from another culture.
