1.   Calculate Scott's BMR: (for a man, multiply body weight in kg by 1 kcal per kg body weight per hour.

   Multiply weight in kg by 1 kcal per kg body weight per hour:

   1 kcal per kg body weight per hour × 84 = 84 kcal per hour

   Calculate your BMR for the total day (or 24 hours):

   84 kcal per hour × 24 hours per day = 2016 kcal per day

2.   Estimate Scott's activity level by selecting the description that most closely fits his general lifestyle. The energy cost of activities is expressed as a percentage of the BMR.

   Heavily active: for men 90%-120%

3.   Multiply Scott's BMR by the decimal equivalent of the lower and higher percentage values for his activity level.

   2016 kcal/day × 0.90 (or 90%) = 1814 kcal/day

   2016 kcal/day × 1.2 (or 120%) = 2419 kcal/day

   These calculations show that Scott expends about 1814 to 2419 kcal per day doing daily activities.

4.    Calculate total daily energy output by adding together BMR and the energy needed to perform daily activities.

   For Scott, his total daily energy output is:

   2016 kcal/day + 1814 kcal/day = 3830 kcal/day OR

   2016 kcal/day + 2419 kcal/day = 4435 kcal/day

   Assuming that Scott is maintaining his present weight, he requires between 3830 and 4435 kcal per day to stay in energy balance!
