Pre-eclampsia is high blood pressure that occurs only in pregnancy. It is also called pregnancy-induced hypertension. The symptoms are sudden high maternal blood pressure, swelling, excessive and rapid weight gain unrelated to food intake, and protein in the urine. If left untreated, it can result in death for both the mother and fetus. No one knows exactly what causes pre-eclampsia, but there appears to be a genetic link as well as a nutritional connection. Typically, management focuses on blood pressure control and includes bed rest.
