Greetings all. I am taking MATH125 Math for Liberal Arts Majors and this is my very last class for my Associates. I left it for last because I am terrible at Math and I have been out of school for many years.

Any quizzes would be appreciated, I just started so I could use quiz 1 ASAP to begin.

I did do well in SOCI111 B011 Spr 13 and can trade for quizzes.

Any help would be appreciated.

1)   John spent $201 shirts and pants for work. Shirts cost $27 and pants cost $22. If he bought a total of 8 articles of clothing, then how many of each kind did he buy?

Answer: 5 shirts and 3 pair of pants

Show how this would be solved using a system of linear equations - either substitution or elimination

I solved it for you. I recommend you always start a new topic for a new question because it could go unnoticed.

Thanks so much. Now I will just try and figure out what it all means!  Slight Smile

Ha ha, no problem...

# of Pants + # of Shirts = 8 (this was given)

Each pair of pants is 27 dollars, so 27*# of pants.
Each shirt is 22 dollars, so 22*# of shirts.

All together, we know he spent 201 dollars, so 27*# of pants + 22*# of shirts = 201.

Let me know if you need more interpretation, otherwise ask more questions by using this link https://biology-forums.com/index.php?action=post;board=33.0

Thank you so much. I was able to grasp how you set up the expression.

I see that it starts with S=8-p

I can see 27(8-p) + 22p = 201

You distributed 27(8-p)

So you have 216 - 27p + 22p = 201

Where I got lost was on this line 216 - 5p = 201

How did you get the -5p

Also, is this method considered elimination or substitution?

- 27p + 22p

-27 plus 22 is -5 ... -5p

Also, is this method considered elimination or substitution?

Substitution
