I need help! I have a test today and don't understand how to find these answers...
Round answer to 2 decimal places. Find the value of x if it does not terminate.

These are fractions:

1. 5/32 = x/x+2
2. 3x/4 = 12-x/6

Does anyone know what x equals if x does not terminate?

Both of these problems are set up as proportions (remember, a proportion is an equation which states that two ratios are equal).  They can be solved by "cross multiplying" (or, as you might recall from your geometry class: The product of the means equals the product of the extremes).

5/32 = x/(x + 2)

5(x + 2) = 32x

5x + 10 = 32x

27x = 10

x = .37   (this is actually a non terminating decimal: .370370370370............; the actual value of x would be 10/27 or you could write  .370 with a bar above the 3 digits).

The solution to the second rounded to two decimal places is 2.18; but this answer is also a nonterminating decimal: 2.181818181818..........; the exact answer is 24/11 or 2.18 with a bar over the "18".
