What is the different between an index fossil and a fossil assemblage?

Index fossils refer to organisms that are geographically widespread but only existed for a short period of geologic time. Fossil assemblages consist of several organisms that existed at the same time and their overlapping periods of existence are used to narrow down the age of the unit.
