Why do you think that a population with a high intrinsic growth rate might cycle above and below its carrying capacity rather than reaching the carrying capacity and stabilizing there?

Many populations fluctuate in size and never appear to stabilize at a particular carrying capacity. These population fluctuations can be quite dramatic,as much as an order of magnitude in size in the example of Darwin’s finches.

The mechanisms that affect the growth and size of populations may be grouped into two general categories.

1. Density-dependent factors intensify as the population size increases and diminish as the population size decreases.
2. Density-independent factors influence a population’s size in the same way regardless of that population’s density.
