There are 2 stages of protein synthesis, but one stage has three parts. Protein synthesis begins with Transcription: the synthesis of RNA from DNA with the aid of mRNA and a RNA polymerase on the promoter region. This takes place in three steps:

1) Initiation: the polymerase attaches to the promoter region
2) Elongation: the polymerase "unzips" the strand of DNA and adds nucleic acids
3) Termination: once long enough, the process stops and there is now a strand of RNA

After Transcription, Translation takes place which is where the mRNA strand "translates" into a protein, tRNA brings the amino acids (responsible for protein synthesis) to the ribosomes, and elongates the protein strands.
