The only intervention shown to decrease the incidence of ICU-acquired weakness is maintenance of blood glucose levels between 80 and 100 mg/dL. Involving the patient in his care is empowering but does not necessarily prevent ICU-acquired weakness. Similarly, education about the risks of immobility may not prevent weakness from developing. Patients should be weaned from mechanical ventilation as soon as it is safe to do so, but this action does not directly address the problem of ICU-acquired weakness.
