1. The SMW was formed to combat the widespread domestic violence in Kazakhstan.
2. The group offers counseling and shelter for abused women, and marriage mediation.
3. Its general approach to domestic violence is as a private matter that should be addressed with Kazakh and Islamic values.
4. It draws on traditional Islamic notions of familial commitment and patience, as well as Kazakh traditions of offering shelter.
