Cf + X .... Rf  +        4  1 n
98              ......104   ........0

(a 4 coefficient is in front of the neutron particle meaning 4 neutrons)
what do I place as X in order to balance the equation?
I thought I had to add 3 alpha particles but apparently that's not it. Please help.

The key point is that X is one particle, not three.

Your three alpha particles total up to a mass number of 12 and an atomic number of 6.

The one particle that hit the Cf was 6-C-12, the isotope of carbon with mass number 12.
