I am performing SDS-PAGE for protein samples and am getting a dense line at the front (see image). Any suggestions why this is occurring?

That looks pretty normal to me.

Which do you consider the more appropriate when it comes to protein quantity, lane 3 or 4? Because lane 3 the bands appear quite discrete while lane 4 the bands are somewhat smudged so to say.
