Answer: The ideal answer should include:
a. The states in the North had abolished slavery and wanted to stop its spread.
b. The states in the South profited from slavery and wanted to encourage its spread.
c. Because the population in the Northern states was greater, those states controlled the House of Representatives.
d. As long as there was the same number of free states as slave states, the Southern states could block any move made in the Senate to abolish slavery.
e. In 1820, there were eleven free states and eleven slave states.
f. The Missouri Compromise finally granted Missouris application for statehood.
g. Maine was admitted as free state at the same time, thereby maintaining the balance between free and slave states.
h. The Missouri Compromise also established the latitude line of 3630 as the northern border of slave states to be created from the Louisiana Territory.
