a) It reduces transpiration such that water will not evaporate from the leaves. Other means of water conservation includes thickening of the stem, which holds maximum amounts of moisture when the plant obtains water. This characteristic allows cacti to withstand extreme temperatures, and they are able to absorb water rapidly when plentiful & use it efficiently.

b) Maximum rate of photosynthesis is slower because, gas exchange (CO2 + O2) decreases as water is reserved.
