Hi,

When we are talking about gases in blood, why can't we just use moles per liter for concentration? Why does everyone use partial pressure? Partial pressure doesn't even directly tell you the relative concentration of two gases, because solubility has to be taken into effect.

Thanks

Because 'gases dissolve, diffuse, and react according to their partial pressures, and not according to their concentrations in gas mixtures or liquids' (Wikipedia, sorry!). Interesting question, though!
