Religion wasn't as important in the Chesapeake colonies as it was further North. This is because the majority of those coming to the colonies in Virginia, for example, were there for making money and were thus mainly comprised of merchants, rather than Puritans, for example. Just wanted to add that religion wasn't the ONLY cause of the witchcraft scares, but this is the easiest to point out.

As for Bacon's Rebellion, this was a revolt made up mostly by indentured servants, who felt they were being "held down" by those they worked for. Indentured servants were common in the Chesapeake area. In New England, there weren't as many. There was mainly a focus on families working together to get work done, rather than having indentured servants doing the work. So since there weren't nearly as many indentured servants in New England, there wasn't anything like Bacon's Rebellion.

Different denominations. Maryland had a large Catholic population who weren't so wrapped up in the religion like the Puritans were.
