Description
At breakfast, a middle-class husband sits absorbed in the newspaper and the public affairs of the day. His wife, in isolation, glances sadly down at her unfinished meal and takes no notice of the world just beyond her window. Very much a “bird in a gilded cage,” the title of a popular song in 1900, she is defined by her handsome dress and the tangible goods on her table.
