Sixty four percent of a population is able to taste a chemical called PTC. Tasters are either homozygous dominant or heterozygous for the trait. For the calculations that follow, marks will rewarded for all relevant formulas, calculations and statements .
A) calculate the percentage of the population that
i. Is unable to taste PTC
ii. Is heterozygous for the trait
ii. Carries the recessive allele

p^2 + 2pq = 0.64
q^2 = 1 - 0.64 + 0.36
q = 0.6

p + q = 1
p = 1 - q = 1 - 0.6 = 0.4

a) Heterozygous = 2pq = 2 * 0.4 * 0.6 = 0.48 = 48%
