After months of infertility procedures, the physician informs a 32-year-old patient that she will never conceive. As the nurse enters the examination room, the patient states, “I guess I’m a failure as a woman.” Based on this statement, the most appropriate nursing diagnosis would be:
1.   Sexual dysfunction.
2.   Ineffective health maintenance.
3.   Disturbed body image.
4.   Ineffective coping.

The nurse may be the only person that the patient feels comfortable with to discuss feelings and to explore coping strategies. The distorted view of herself indicates that at this time she is ineffectively coping.
