Joshua Kyalangalilwa Lillian Henderson Sociology 251 October 9th 2019 Discussion On tuesday October 8th 2019 sociology class interacted in a discussion about oneself in different perspectives. First thing that was kinda odd that I thought of is how they split us in small groups no more than like 10 and gave us a sheet, asking personal questions like what's the first thing you think others recognize first about you. After answering those questions the instructor asked us to get into a circle for an open discussion. Basically she started to ask these personal questions in the group to get the group response, but most were reluctant to share at first dealing with how personal, and kinda deep these topics were, but after some of the outgoing people responded, like me, we found some similarities and I think that made us comfortable to a certain point because more and more people started to step outside their comfort zones and share. I feel like the exercise was really to just dig deep and create communication between the students and just really link, because there are some things that happened in that session I probably would never forget. Even though we come in contact with each other every day we really don't share and dive deep and just connect with each other. There was a guy who I sit next to a day to day basis and he just had so much to share and most of it stunned me because I could have never guessed that he was engaged and that it was to a black woman. I think stuff like this is so beneficial just the opportunity for a safe place to just talk and be heard or even just listen. There was another guy in my group who I think learned something from the story I shared about being racially profiled, and he was shocked about it. He said he realized his privilege because nothing like that has ever happened to him or any of his friends. I feel like The world would be a better place if you were able to connect with everybody you come in contact with just like this on a day to day basis. Sharing experiences actually adds knowledge. Connecting is a major problem in the U.S now days the fact that people really don't talk or even share because whatever you just went through somebody else could be going through the same thing right at the moment and you could help. Sharing and discussing can be used in any situation really just as long as the other person is willing to listen. Communication is what keeps us from being a regular species the ability to pass down information has always been what made humans special.
