Chapter 23 focuses on the knowledge and skills the nurse needs to know to help prevent venous stasis. Suggested Discussion Questions, Lab, and Clinical Activities Discuss the assessment data that indicate a client is at risk for venous stasis and the nursing interventions to prevent problems associated with this condition. During lab, show students the different types and sizes of antiemboli stockings. Have students work in pairs and take measurements in order to practice applying the appropriate size antiemboli stockings to each other. Afterwards, ask them to discuss the experience and what they learned from it. 3. During lab, ask for a volunteer and have other students apply a sequential compression device. Once the device is applied, inform the students that the client needs to get out of bed. Have the students disconnect the sequential compression stockings by two different methods a) removing the stockings and b) disconnecting the tubing. Have the client return to the bed and students restart the compression therapy each time. Ask the students to discuss the pros and cons of each method. 4. During the clinical experience, assign students to care for clients with antiemboli stockings and/or sequential compression devices. FOCUSING ON CLINICAL THINKING Consider This The client brought her own antiemboli stockings from home. The UAP tells you that the clients stockings are loose and do not stay up. What will you do The client is on a sequential compression device, and the nurse is monitoring neurovascular checks every 2 hours. During this last check, the client states that his leg is starting to feel numb. What action, if any, would you take
