General Lab Safety Pre-Lab Questions What should you always wear to protect your eyes when you are in a laboratory? You should always wear safety goggles. Should you add acid to water or water to acid? You should add acid to water Where should you dispose of broken glass? In a puncture-resistant container and seal the container and place in the dumpster/trash can. What should you do if you spill a chemical on your hand? Immediately wash your hands with water Exercise 1: What Is It? Laboratories contain specialized equipment used while performing experiments. Locate each item pictured on this page in your lab kit, and place a check mark in the appropriate place when you find it. After you have completed this checklist, sketch 5 additional items in your lab kit that will be useful in completing the labs that follow. Beaker 50 mL ? 100 mL ? Stir Stick ? Graduated Cylinder 10 mL ? 100 mL ? Test Tube ? Pipette ? Petri Dish ? Sketch, take a picture, or find a picture online of five additional pieces of labware not shown on the previous page in the space provided below: Experiment 1: Neutralization of Acids And Bases Data Tables Table 2: Initial Litmus Test Results Weigh Boat Chemical Contents Litmus Results Additional Observations A Water No color change B Sodium Bicarbonate and water Changed to light blue The color of the paper became a light orange as it dried C Acetic acid Changed to a light orange As it dried turns a dark blue/purple Table 3: Neutralization of a Base Amount of Acid Litmus Results 1 mL Paper turns light blue 2 mL Paper also turns light blue 3 mL Turns to a blue 4 mL Turns dark blue 5 mL Turns very dark blue/purple Post-Lab Questions State your hypothesis (developed in Step 8) here. Be sure to include what you think the pH will be and why. I think that water will be neutral and acetic aid would have a pH balance of 8 or 9 What is a neutralization reaction? Neutralization is when acids and bases react with each other. The two opposites cancel each other out resulting is a product that is neither an acid nor a base When might neutralization reactions be used in a laboratory setting? Neutralization reactions can be used in a laboratory setting to dispose of chemicals. When you neutralize a chemical then it can be typically be disposed by flushing it down a sink At what point was the solution in beaker B neutralized? I say about 3mL the acetic was neutralized What do you think would have been the results if a stronger solution of sodium bicarbonate was used? Would it take more or less to neutralize? What about a weaker concentration of sodium bicarbonate? if a stronger solution of sodium bicarbonate was used then it would take less to neutralize the acetic acid. With a weaker concentration of sodium bicarbonate then it would have taken longer to neutralize the acetic acid.
