Throughout the past engineers have designed many tools and gadgets to help shape the world into what it is today, but not all of them were successful. Although there have been many successful designs, there have been a share of failures as well. With the process of reverse engineering, today’s engineers are able to disassemble and reanalyze and apply these newer ideas into the designs. These newer designs will hopefully help ensure the safety and efficiency of the object. Having chosen to analyze the engineering disaster of the Petrobras 36 (P-36) on March 15, 2001, the group first looked at its history. The Roncador oil field was discovered in October 1996 and is located 130 kilometers off the coast of Brazil. The Petrobras 36 was the largest floating semi-submersible oil platform at the time and produced an average of 84000 barrels of crude a day. On March 15, 2001 two explosions; one in the starboard column, and one in the emergency drain tank, initiated the sinking of the Petrobras 36. The accident killed 11 of the 175 people on board, and sank the Petrobras 36. In order to fully understand why and what caused the Petrobras 36 to sink, the group did research and found many useful articles. Each article had many common facts, and details that were used to piece the entire story together. After figuring out the root of the problem, the group will apply the process of reverse engineering to the Petrobras 36 so that history will not repeat itself.
