Part II: Short Answer What is the main reason you are applying to FRI? Please write in no more than 2-3 sentences. My goal at UT Austin is to take advantage of all the learning experiences I can, especially those that go beyond just taking classes, and I am excited that FRI provides this opportunity to me as a freshman. Artificial intelligence has been a passion of mine for the past four years, and I want to continue to learn and apply AI to solve prevalent problems in the present world and in the future. I am most interested in the new Creative AI stream as well as Maker Space, DIY Diagnostics, and Autonomous Robots. What do you expect from FRI to help you get prepared for your career goals? Please write in no more than 2-3 sentences. From sixth grade through high school, I participated in multiple science fairs, placing first several times at the Orange County Science and Engineering Fair and presenting at the California State Science Fair for my artificial intelligence archery research projects. My research experience has been independent thus far, and I have always hoped for the opportunity to work with university professors and graduate students to guide and expand my research thinking, techniques, and results to a higher level. I believe a strong research background is the best way to master AI concepts and is a path to providing meaningful contributions in my career in AI. As you reflect on your learning experiences in high school, what has intrigued you the most and why? (Maximum 500 characters) During my high school experience, I fell in love with artificial intelligence. From conducting personal research projects on the use of computer vision and neural networks to analyze archery form to creating a pose estimation powered mobile app to assist archers with independent practice, I have experienced first-hand the immense potential of AI. I have always been fascinated with the human-like process of training a neural network and having it assess data more accurately than any human could. 4. Write five sentences (and only five sentences) describing yourself, your life, and your experiences that form an accurate portrayal of who you are now. Please number the sentences 1 through 5 with a space between each sentence (maximum 500 characters total). Have fun with this! I have been competing in archery for 10 years (ranked 6th nationally U18 last year). I built a wrist-worn device that evaluated my archery form using an LSTM neural network. I play the trombone and piano and love all types of music including K-pop, alternative rock, and classical. I enjoy watching anime, especially those with a soundtrack I love. My archery coach is the first female Korean Olympic gold medalist; my other coach recently moved to Austin to start an archery academy! 5. Is there anything else you would like to share with us as we consider your application? Thank you for this opportunity, I can’t wait to get to Texas and begin!
