SlideshowReport

Adaptation to extreme cold in an ectotherm.

Description
Several species of insects, reptiles, and amphibia—like the wood frog shown here—can reduce the risk of freezing by increasing glucose levels, which decreases the freezing point of their body fluids. Furthermore, some species can tolerate being partially frozen because they can prevent ice crystals from forming inside their cells.
