Arrangement of the sarcoplasmic reticulum, transverse tubules, and myofibrils in a single skeletal m

Description
Action potentials propagate along the plasma membrane and down the transverse tubules. Inset: The depolarization produced by the action potentials opens Ca2+ channels in the membranes of the sarcoplasmic reticulum, through which Ca2+ diffuses into the cell cytosol. Ca2+ then binds to troponin, initiating muscle contraction. Ca2+ is then pumped back into the sarcoplasmic reticulum by ATP-dependent ion pumps. This results in muscle relaxation.
