SlideshowReport

The neuromuscular junction.

Description
The structure of a neuromuscular junction (a) as seen in a scanning electron micrograph, and (b) as depicted schematically. Action potentials in the motor neuron cause exocytosis of ACh-containing synaptic vesicles. ACh binds to receptors in the plasma membrane of the junctional folds of the skeletal muscle cell. This initiates an action potential in the muscle cell.
