As shown in the insets, lipids can be distributed throughout the cell in various ways. (a) Lateral diffusion occurs between the ER and nuclear envelope. (b) Vesicle transport occurs among the membranes of the endomembrane system. (c) Lipid exchange proteins can transfer lipids between any two membranes, such as between the ER and a mitochondrion.
