A helical array of and tubulin forms a microtubule

Description
Left: the crystal structure of an ab dimer is shown.

The a subunit is on top and has GTP bound. The b subunit has GDP and the anticancer drug paclitaxel bound.

Right: A schematic model of a microtubule.

The microtubule can be thought of either as a helical array of ab dimers or as 13 parallel rows of ab dimers. These rows are referred to as protofilaments.
