Description
The synapse and synaptic transmission. (a) A thin cleft, called the synapse, separates one cell from another. (b) An electron micrograph of a synapse between two nerve cells. (c) As a nerve impulse arrives at the synapse, it triggers the release of a chemical neurotransmitter from storage vesicles in the presynaptic cell. The neurotransmitters diffuse across the synapse and bind to receptors on the membrane of the postsynaptic cell, where they trigger another nerve impulse by allowing ions into the postsynaptic cell.
