Description
An ancestral fish population was split into two by the formation of the Isthmus of Panama about 3.5 million years ago. Since that time, different genetic changes have occurred in the two populations because of their geographic isolation; these changes eventually led to the formation of different species. The porkfish (Anisotremus virginicus) is found in the Caribbean Sea, and the Panamic porkfish (Anisotremus taeniatus) is found in the Pacific Ocean.
