Description

Commissioned by Jefferson to explore the newly acquired Louisiana Territory, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark traveled northwest from St. Louis to the Pacific Ocean. They failed to find an all-water route that would connect the Northwest Coast to eastern markets but brought back a wealth of information about the physical and cultural landscape of the region.
