The use of food service refers to the consumption of meals purchased at restaurants, supermarkets and other businesses as opposed to those prepared at home. Please do not count those meals eaten as lunch as a student or a worker, at school cafeterias, work canteens, refectories and mess halls where you have no choice. Food service businesses include not only fine dining restaurants, casual dining restaurants, quick service restaurants, cafés, and bars where you sit down and eat, but also other places where you take out prepared meals or have them delivered. They also include breakfast places that offer dine-in, take-out, or delivery services.
Fine dining restaurants

o The staff brings the food to the table, and the bill is paid at the end of the meal. Professional service is important, and quality service is provided to patrons. Meal courses and/or entrées complete with appetizers and sides are provided. The price per guest is relatively higher.

Casual dining restaurants

o The staff brings the food to the table, and the bill is paid at the end of the meal. More upscale than quick service restaurants
Casual dining restaurants and more casual than fine dining ones. Moderately priced. Primarily serves dishes a la carte than in meal courses.

o Self-serve system where customers take the food to the table themselves. Focused on convenience and speed of service.


Quick service restaurants

Quick, standardized, streamlined preparation of meals and snacks. Relatively lower price per guest. No alcoholic drinks served. Payment is made immediately after ordering the food. Includes places specializing in takeout and delivery service.

Cafés and bars

o Offers coffee, non-alcoholic drinks, and ice cream. Alcoholic drinks are primarily served with a limited selection of food.
