SlideshowReport

The chromosomal basis of independent assortment.

Tags
Description
The genes for seed colour (Y or y) and seed shape (R or r) in peas are on different chromosomes. During metaphase of meiosis I, different arrangements of the two chromosome pairs can lead to different combinations of the alleles in the resulting haploid cells. On the left, the chromosome carrying the dominant R allele has segregated with the chromosome carrying the recessive y allele; on the right, the two chromosomes carrying the dominant alleles (R and Y) have segregated together.
