The physician saw something in the first set of lab values that caused him to look further for +-thalassemia minor. Hgb, hct were slightly down while MCV and MCH were down to a greater degree. These lab values with two other values triggered his suspicions. What two other labs values would have done this and why?

RG's MCHC is in the normal range, indicating that the overall mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration is normal. Her RBC is also higher than normal meaning that she has more RBC than normal to compensate for the smaller cells, and thus increase the total hemoglobin concentration. This is a characteristic of +thalassemia minor.
