If the Moon were twice as far away from the Earth as it is currently (more precisely, if the center of the moon were twice as far away from the center of the Earth as it is currently), how would the force of gravity exerted on the Moon by the Earth change? Sir Isaac Newton realized what is called the inverse square relation. He recognized that the force of gravity decreases as the square of the distance between the object increases. So, if the distance were doubled or 2 then, 2 squared equals 4. The gravity would be 4 times weaker.
