How is it protective in nature? How cans its function makes it difficult to cure us when we have an illness in the CNS?

The blood-brain barrier prevents many of the chemicals in the bloodstream from reaching the brain. This usually means that viruses and bacteria in the bloodstream cannot reach the brain, including drugs making it hard to cure certain illnesses.
