Divide the number of chromosomes in the somatic cell in half.  Dog somatic cell = 78 chromosomes;  dog gamete = 39 chromosomes.

The number of chromosomes in a somatic cell is the diploid number. The  number of chromosomes in a sex cell (the gamete) is the haploid number. To get the haploid number from the diploid number, you just divide by 2.

To get the number of different combination of chromosomes possible in a gamete, think about how many gametes are formed from one sex cell. Hint: it's four.
