ammonia is highly soluble in water, therefore if the apparatus is moist, then dissolution of ammonia may take place, which might create a partial vaccum in the apparatus ,which is undesirable. Also, impurities like CO/H2S may poison the catalyst that is finely divided iron(Fe).
