The Haber process now produces 100 million tons of nitrogen fertilizer per year, mostly in the form of anhydrous ammonia, ammonium nitrate, and urea. 1% of the world's annual energy supply is consumed in the Haber process (Science 297(1654), Sep 2002). That fertilizer is responsible for sustaining 40% of the Earth's population, as well as various deleterious environmental consequences, although the total may be higher due to the North Korea's refusal to give reports.....

Haber's contract wtih the manufacturer of ammonia called him to receive 1 pfenig (one hundred of a German Mark) per kg of ammonia, and he soon became not only famous but also rich. He was awarded a Nobel Prize for ammonia Synthesis, but choice was criticized because  of his role in developing the use of poison gases for Germany during WorldWar 1
