A quadratic will have either 2, 1 or 0 real solutions.  The number of solutions depends on the value of the determinant.

The determinant is that portion of the quadratic formula under the square root sign (b² - 4ac)

If that value is positive, you have 2 real roots, no complex roots.
If that value is zero, you have 1 real root (a double root essentially)
If that value is negative, you have 0 real roots and 2 complex roots.
