Solving equations with variables on both sides?

I am having the hardest time with this. I don't get it all. I've looked at a bunch of sites, but all their examples have equations that look like 34-7x=6+2x and mine doesn't look like that! Nothing is attached to my variable. One of my problems is 7*x-8=x-7*5. Can someone please give me a step by step on how to solve equations like this? Merci beaucoup!

What do the stars represent? Multiplication?
Is this the equation you're asking about: 7x - 8 = x - 35

34 - 7x = 6 + 2x

34 - 7x - 34 = 6 + 2x - 34

-7x = 2x - 28

-7x - 2x = 2x - 28 - 2x

-9x = -28

-1/9*-9x = -1/9*-28

x = 28/9
-----------------------
7*x - 8 = x - 7*5

7x - 8 = x - 35

7x - 8 + 8 = x - 35 + 8

7x = x - 27

7x - x = x - 27 - x

6x = -27

1/6*6x = 1/6*-27

x = -27/6

x = -9/2

7*x-8 = x-7*5 same as 7x-8 = x-35

Now put the x variables on one side (+ becomes - and vice versa)
7x-x=8-35
6x=-27

x=-27/6

For your problem:
7x - 8 = x - 7*5 Assuming I'm reading this right, this is the same as 7x - 8 = x - 35

First step: try to get all x's on the same side. So let's subtract x from both side.
7x - 8 - x = x - 35 - x
Simplify the above (ie. cancel x - x = 0 on the right, 7x - x = 6x on the left):
6x - 8 = -35
Now we need to get all the things that don't have an x to the other side. So add 8 to both sides:
6x - 8 + 8 = -35 + 8
Simplify above again:
6x = -27
Now we need to get an equation for x. So we divide both sides by 6.
(6x)/6 = -27/6
x= -27/6

Note that if you substitute x= -27/6 into your original equation, you get that the left side equals the right side. Try it with your calculator.

(this last step where we checked that our x worked with the first equation is called checking your solution. If you're ever asked to check your work, this is what you would do).

first in the eq we separate x on one side of eq and constant from other side
34-7x=6+2x
at R.H.S +34 goes to the L.H.S and become -34 and from L.H.S +2x come R.H S as a -2x
-7x-2x=6-34
-9x=-28
- cancel from both side
9x=28
now here 9 is multiplying with x and on the other side 9 will divide with 28
x=28/9 ans
7*x-8=x-7*5
7x-8=x-35
separate x and constant value
7x-x=-35+8
6x=-27
we find only the value of x not 6x so taking 6 on the other side
x=-27/6 ans
