Pictured above are the contents of an emergency kit. Choose one item from the kit that relies on an electrochemical change for its function.  Use relevant chemical equations and terms to explain the electrochemical change that occurs. State one positive or one negative aspect of using the item from the kit that relates to the electrochemical change involved in its operation.

You may state the cellphone, or the torch. Both of them involve electrochemical changes since they both have batteries. Batteries work by channeling cations and anions to the negative anode and positive cathode respectively. The constant "recycling" of the ions in a battery, and this is the advantage, is that it allows the tool to work for a long time, much longer than what a candle can withstand, and much much longer than what a match stick can either. However, its disadvantage is that when the ionic radicals join together, the reaction stops, and this leads to different means to "jumpstart" the battery again, or we might need to replace it completely. And since this is an emergency kit, having no spare batteries, or bulbs for that matter, on the spot, forces us to rely on different means such as a match stick or candle.

Hope this helps Slight Smile
