A structural gene is a gene that directs the synthesis of a protein under the control of some regulatory gene. -Galactosidase is coded for by a structural gene (lacZ). Also, structural genes encode the gene products that are involved in the biochemical pathway of the operon. Two structural geneslacY and lacAform a part of the operon. lacY encodes the enzyme lactose permease, whereas lacA encodes an enzyme called transacetylase.
