If Mary were lost in the Sahara desert in the summer, why should she not drink alcohol?

Because one of the effects of drinking alcohol is dehydration and so would be one of the worst things to drink. If the alcohol was of low percentage, such as a weak beer, initially the water content of the drink would hydrate her, but once the alcohol kicks in through it's diuretic effect, she would lose water.

Fun fact. The hangover effect experienced after excessive drinking is caused by the swelling of the brain due to dehydration.

Because she is probably already dehydrated, the alcohol would just make the situation worse.
