The degree of responsibility a manager possesses can be determined by appraising the manager on the following four dimensions:
.Attitude toward and conduct with employees  responsible managers are those who take charge of their work groups, praise and give credit to those employees who are deserving, stay connected to work group problems and activities, and take actions to maintain productivity and are willing to terminate poor performers if necessary.
.Behavior with upper management  responsible managers are those who accept criticism for mistakes and buffer their work groups from excessive criticism and then work to ensure their work groups meet upper management expectations and activities.
.Behavior with other groups  responsible managers are those who make sure any gaps between their areas and those of other managers are securely filled.
.Personal attitudes and values  responsible managers are those who identify with the work group, put organizational goals ahead of their personal desires and interests, perform tasks that offer no immediate reward but help employees, the company, or both and conserve corporate resources as if the resources were their own.
